The RAF 1 Claim Form requires a “Specified Voucher (Tax invoice for funeral expenses)” and “Specified vouchers and proof of payment”. A claimant has the right to independently source the services from a service provider of their choice to attend to the burial or cremation of the body of the deceased and thereafter lodge a claim with the RAF. Additionally, one of the elements of a claim for pecuniary loss is that the value of the claimant's estate must have diminished due to obligation to bury or cremate the body of the deceased.
The following people may claim for funeral or cremation expenses:
Once a valid claim has been lodged with the RAF, an investigation takes place to verify the information received from the claimant. Any additional information required will be requested from the claimant. The RAF will determine if it is liable to pay the claim and to what extent.
The family must bury or cremate the deceased, pay for the funeral or cremation and then the family member, executor of the deceased or heir of the deceased must submit the prescribed claim documentation to the RAF.
The RAF may pay for the following funeral or cremation expenses in accordance with section 18(4) of the Road Accident Fund Act, 1996:
The following expenses are not covered, amongst others:
