Death Benefits | Funeral or Cremation Expenses

Funeral or Cremation Expenses is compensation paid to the person who was legally responsible to pay for the funeral or cremation expenses of a person who was killed in a motor vehicle accident.

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) assists bereaved families, by paying compensation towards the cost of the burial or the cremation of the body of the deceased, during their time of need. A claimant is entitled to independently source the services of a service provider of his or her choice to attend to the burial or the cremation of the body of the deceased. A claimant may then submit his or her claim to the RAF with the invoice as proof of payment to the service provider.

The following persons who have paid for the cremation or burial of the body of the deceased may claim for such expenses:

The executor of a deceased estate.

The heirs of the deceased or a member of the deceased's immediate family, such as a spouse, parent or child, and a person who was under a legal duty to pay for and has incurred liability for the funeral expenses.

A member of the deceased’s immediate family and a person who was under a legal duty to pay for, and has incurred liability for the funeral expenses.
